FOUR

Ynant suddenly stopped, looking hard at the ground, and Killian bumped into her with a loud exclamation.

She ignored his protest. "Are you sure these really are sandback tracks?" she asked.

Killian shrugged. "I know, they look a bit big, but what else could they be around here? Let's keep going a bit further." They had followed the tracks into a rocky gully and were wondering why the sandback would have come this way in the dark.

Killian found himself in the lead when he spied a cave ahead, and his nose twitched with a foul smell, like rotten meat. He stopped and motioned to his sister. "Uh-oh, I think this might be..."

Just then a stocky head raised itself from the lip of the cave. Its twin horns were still short, so it was young, but its jaws were like shovels, and its thick snout twitched like a block of rubber. Killian's heart pounded as its mean, slitted eyes locked onto him.

The eripta gave voice to a rasping cry and licked its lips.

He turned and waved his arms. "Ruuun!" he yelled. He had the feeling that they couldn't outrun this monster.

Ynant was already many strides up the steep slope, scrabbling hard and dislodging rocks. Killian imitated her, catching up a little. "Our only hope," he gasped, "is that it's already eaten our sandback and isn't hungry!" He thought he could hear the beast running behind them, but dared not look back.

At this point, for the gentle reader's sake, we had best look away. Perhaps the two adventurers survive with a tale to tell, or perhaps they don't. Either way, their tracking skills obviously need some improvement.
